This amazingly crafted traditional 13ft Algonquin birch bark canoe is hand crafted by Scottish craftsman Angus Simpson using traditional First Nations canoe building methods right here in Ontario, from locally and ethically sourced birch, and cedar.

Built to represent an Algonquin canoe from the late 19th century, this fully functional canoe is made from a skin of birch bark, formed with cedar ribs, sheathing and gunwales. The waterproofing of spruce resin and bear fat has been used to seal the spruce root stitched seams. The canoe has been built using hand tools such as the crooked knife, axe and drawknife, making a beautiful and truly handcrafted canoe.

The canoe is built in the traditional style with a mild rocker giving good tracking on flat water as well as a flaring cross section making it a fast canoe to paddle. It is also easy to portage and handle at only 44 pounds.

Very few birchbark canoes are still made today, and even fewer people still have the traditional knowledge to build birch bark canoes - so we are pleased to offer this unique piece of craftsmanship and Canadian cultural icon.
