Traditional First Nation birch bark canoes use no nails, screws, or any other materials in their construction other than what the forest provides - a marvel of engineering and knowledge of the environment that employs what we now call "leave no trace" principles. Ray Mears has deemed them "the finest craft people have ever invented", and we would have to concur - their beauty, functionality and design is unparalleled.
