Trangia Storm Burner

To truly appreciate using a Trangia, the included spirit burner is the versatile way to go. It can be used with a plethora of compatible fuels, works well in all weather conditions, is so quiet that you sometimes can’t even tell if it is lit, and its brass body barely weighs anything. Frankly, the only challenge I have with it is that you can’t top it up if you misjudged how much fuel to use and run out mid-cooking  and sometimes it can be tricky adjusting flames with the simmer cap.

So even though I had weened myself from using gas burners, when Trangia announced that they had made their own in-house burner, I confess I was pretty interested. It wasn’t available in North America for quite some time as they worked on meeting our certifications which gave me time to ponder… should I get one, and does using one go against the Trangia-ness of using a spirit burner from this century-old company to cook in the serene outdoors?

Using a spirit burner with a Trangia is so silent that I frequently have to put my hand over the stove to see if it’s even lit. I was worried the Storm would be so loud that it would be similar to my MSR Whisperlite (which isn’t so whisper quiet) or Dragonfly (where you wouldn’t even hear someone walk up behind you) but it’s remarkable how quiet the Storm is.

The Trangia Storm accepts any fuel canister using the EN417 threaded valve (an international standard), which includes JetBoil, MSR, and Primus so feel free to use any of them from your gear closet. It also makes it worry free if it dawned on you on the way to your campsite that you forgot a canister at home. While not as universally available as methyl hydrate for a spirit burner, this is the next best option as long as you can find an outdoors store. Thankfully, these pressurized fuel types don’t seem to produce any soot, resulting in clean pots and pans when cooking.

Those that have used a gas burner before will be completely comfortable using the fuel regulator to find the right flame size and can confidently dial between full flame to quickly boil water, to simmer your ingredients to enrich your meal. Being able to utilize a canister certainly gives you confidence that you’ll be able to completely cook multiple group meals without running out of fuel.

As for packing, you can fit a Trangia Storm within the 27 kit if you remove the kettle or within the larger 25 kit. Trangia went the extra mile and included a lovely wool pouch where the stove can perfectly curl up inside.

One last thing I appreciate about using the Storm is that there is no risk of accidentally spilling fuel on yourself or the ground when topping it up.

So whether you are an existing JetBoil user or this is your very first stove, I think the Storm splits the difference between being a stellar quiet stove and a versatile cooking tool that fits perfectly into the Trangia ecosystem. It still retains the Trangia feel, is built with quality parts and gives you cooking options depending on your cooking style which is exactly what you need when planning a camping trip. While the fuel canister will take up a little extra space on day-trips, multi-day camping trips are the perfect excuse to bring this wonderful stove with you.
