The Legend of the Mimigwesseos

The Legend of the Mimigwesseos

The Legend of the Mimigwesseos contains stories and wood-cut illustrations about the secretive elf-like creatures known as "Mimigwesseos": creatures who were sometimes helpful, but also dangerous to meddle with who lived in the vast water laced boreal forest of the Woodland Cree. While the Mimigwesseos are gone now (along with the underwater moose, talking animals, and the terrifying witigos), this books shares stories about these legendary characters of the spirit world.

Before Europeans arrived, the land that the Cree of northern Saskatchewan inhabited was home to talking bears, moose that lived under water, the trickster god Wisakyjak, blackened, lipless, fanged cannibals known as "witigos", and "mimigwesseos": elf-like creatures with flat, noseless faces who lived among the rocks on islands and in the ledges and cliffs of lakes and rivers. The Legend of the Mimigwesseos chronicles stories about First Nations people and these secretive, sometimes helpful, sometimes dangerous creatures.

This 40 page paperback book features full page wood-cut illustrations by Annie Downes Catterson, and is suitable for readers of all ages.
